Reflections upon a cathastrope

ReflectionsWednesday morning, before getting up, we were listening to some of the women praying out loud under their covers. One of these women is probably in her eighties. She was saying something like this, “Thank you God for doing your job as our Father and teaching us a lesson we will never forget..We have not been treating our land very well, we have not been treating each other good, we have destroyed our land with our greed and search for richness, Thank you God for opening our eyes…now we are forced to look at our ways of living differently..forced to treat our neighbours better and protect the earth…Merci Bon Dieu!” …

We were saddened and in one way impressed by this woman’s reflections… Haitians belief in God is impressive under such circumstances. Nobody is doubting their God! For me as a ‘religious light’ this is indeed fascinating. One thing is for sure, the victims of this catastrophe find comfort in praying. …And then we had to run out of bed due to another aftershock!! The ground was shaking, and my legs would not stop shaking either. This only lasted a couple of seconds, so I can only imagine what last Tuesday must have been like…

The word on the street is this – ”the US is using this catastrophe as a sneeky way of invading Haiti again. 11 000 american troops have arrived in the country. The US strategy is to focus on the security situation as the main concern – also for emergency relief efforts – however – most Haitians have shown an amazing dignity and calm in this chaos. The elements of criminal activity are minor, but of course this is what media wants! Those criminals were there before the earthquake… Haitians are tired of being portrayed as wild hooligans. Yes, they are homeless, they are mourning the loss of their loved ones, they are thirsty and hungry and some very sick..but give them a chance to recover! The world wants to help..why is the help not reaching the victims?”

On the radio there are hundreds and thousands of messages being broadcasted from smaller and larger camps who have yet to see any of the international aid being brought in…
